Recollecting Bubba’s hook. It was surreal.

It has been a few weeks since the Masters but while recalling some of my experiences at Augusta I can’t but smile. The golf fans, in particular, star in most of my stories from the tournament of tournaments, which I had a chance to see with my own eyes for the first time in my life. I recall many of the enthusiastic fans especially when I watch Bubba Watson on TV.

Virtually in every corner of the course a great story about the victory or defeat happened during all these years the Masters is held. Bubba will be, probably until the end of his career and unless he performs something even better, connected with hole number 10 where he played the never-to-be-forgotten banana shot from the trees in the 2012 Masters which miraculously landed on the green. He proved to be pretty good at hooking and won the green jacket.

When I arrived at the 10th – from where Bubba played his big shot four years ago – I was surprised by how many people were already there shouting enthusiastically: “Here, it was here! This is the spot from which Bubba played the sensational shot!” Those who experienced it first-hand started immediately sharing their stories and showing emotions. I mentioned it before – all the spectators are absolutely engrossed in the Masters. What I experienced at the 10th was just further proof of the uniqueness of the first Grand Slam of the season.

Once I really stood up on the place where Bubba was standing years ago and played his hook, I immediately understood the enthusiasm of all the fans. It had to be a phenomenal shot worth a million dollars. Even on television it looked magnificent; however you will really appreciate it once you stand on the same ground that touched Bubba’s feet four years ago.

Bubba Watson played the most important shot of his career back then – a shot which he had to lead from an incredibly small space. Shooting with a pitching wedge in his hands was not easy at all as Watson’s ball landed deep in the woods on pine straw, 150 metres from the pin without a clear shot to the green. Watson executed a miraculous recovery shot with 40 yards of hook on his 52-degree gap wedge and stopped the ball within fifteen feet of the hole. He literally played a corner. And he made it! Bubba Watson rendered an artful par from the trees on the second hole of a playoff at Augusta National and won a title. Wow!
